This is probably the only iteration I will be able to post because of Vimeo upload limits but thought it would be good to show where I am and what is left to do. A few things jump out; I still need to retrofit some more type over some of the middle section, the pink noise/tv transition is really annoying me and the colour grading from the horses to the pier need either changing or transitioning better (maybe with a few similarly coloured flares or overlays).

Just finished the type animations for the second to last scene…decided I really like the overlayed text now. Adds a much needed layer of complexity to the film and helps tie the audio to the video more.

After talking to Ben and discussing that my film needs a little less flow and a little more quick cutting etc I am toying with the idea of some static type animation over the top saying some of the lines from the news footage. Not 100% convinced, they make nice screenshots and I think it looks really nice but I’m still not sure they fit with the context of the film as a whole. Think I am just going to have to keep going and see what happens.

I followed a really good (if slightly mental) tutorial on Youtube to learn the process behind datamoshing. The basics of it are that video compressors use two types of keyframes to lower file sizes for video…a P-frame and an I-frame. I-frames hold colour information and P-frames (keyframes) hold movement information for those colours/pixels. By deleting I-frames between videos you get the effect of one videos movement being translated over another videos colours and pixels.

You start out with ffmpegX which re-encodes the video to avi and with keyframes every 999999 frames (removing all but the first I-frame). After doing this to two videos you take it into this horrible program called avidemux and append one video with another, then delete the i-frame for the second video and you get something like the image below:

I have plenty of plans for this as I think it is potentially a really cool effect…

Spent the last few days colour correcting and datamoshing (will post more on that later). I had decided for a while that I wanted some more visual elements like text or 3d things so came up with this style test for the title sequence. I have since translated most of it into after effects and will hopefully have the first scene done by today.

The idea of the text is to make it look like something is loading or initiating with the lights, number and scrolling text underneath.

Spent a day in Thomasz’s fine music studio whilst he showed me the ropes of  sound design…made the base track for my music and also a load of sound effects. The bit-crushed salad-spinner may also make an appearance.
